Mix Cosmetiques is here to help you understand the pros and cons of different lip products.

There are several different types of lip products on the market, and it can be hard to decide if lipstick, lip balm or lip gloss is right for you.

It’s important to have the options – I mean, what’s one of the first things you notice about someone? Their lips, right? – but it can sometimes be overwhelming for makeup lovers like you to understand which option is the best fit.

Here at Mix Cosmetiques, we’re leveraging our knowledge of organic, sustainable, and custom lipsticks, lip balms and lip glosses to help you choose.

Lips are one of the defining characteristics of your face and send all sorts of signals about what you’re feeling to the people around you.

Well, after more than a year of keeping our lips under the cover of masks, we’re starting to see guidelines relax so we can finally show them off again to the world. And that probably means you’re ready to start putting some product on those beauties!

But what types of lip products should you use?

Lipstick vs. Lip Gloss vs. Lip Balm – let the battle begin!

The type of lip product you need depends on two things: the occasion and, most importantly, how that product feels on your lips. Let’s look at three of the most popular types of lip products, what they’re like, and how best to use them.

Lipstick

I’m starting things off with a biggie: lipstick. This lip product has been around for, well, literally ages. Ancient Sumerian people might have been the first to use lipstick, crushing gemstones and using that to decorate their lips and eyes. Ancient Egyptians like Cleopatra crushed bugs to get carmine that she’d use to give her lips a red hue – a practice still in use today.

These days, lipstick comes in several different varieties:

Cream Lipstick

This falls between shiny and matte, so it’s not glossy but also doesn’t look dry like a matte. You’ll probably need a lip liner to keep this tight pigment in the lines. And a lip brush helps with better application.

Matte Lipstick

These lipsticks have a dry finish without moisture that you’ll definitely notice. You can even it out with your finger or a lip brush. This is another one you’ll probably want to pair with a liner and moisturizer.

Semi-matte Lipstick

If the dry feel of the matte just isn’t doing it for you but you love that matte look, you might try a semi-matte for something that still has a touch of moisture to it. No lip liner needed, but you’ll probably still want a lip brush for better application.

Sheer/Shiny Lipstick

This is the classic lip product that most of us are familiar with. It’s shiny, smooth, and has lots of moisture. It’s perfect for daily use and no lip liner is needed. Apply with a brush or your finger.

If you’re looking for a classic lip product, Mix Cosmetiques’ Made My Lipstick is perfect for you. I’ve formulated a creamy lipstick that’s natural, moisturizing, and will give you a long-lasting, richly pigmented lip color. Plus, I create each individual lipstick specifically for you — just send in a photo or a sample and I’ll match it. Or you can choose from any shade (or a mix of shades) from our gallery.

Lip Gloss

Lip gloss is another lip product that everyone seems to love. It hit its stride in the 90s and it’s only gotten better from there!

Basic lip gloss is a liquid formula, often tinted, that is shiny and glossy. You can wear it by itself or over lipstick. And, if you get My Shine Lip Gloss from Mix Cosmetiques, you can decide exactly what color you want and how you want your lip gloss to behave.

Seriously.

I’ve got more than 50 shades to choose from, all of which can be mixed to create your unique signature shade.  But the fun doesn’t end there.

I’m sure you’ve used a lip gloss at some point in your life that was anything but what you wanted. Maybe it was too thick or too sticky. Maybe it even felt a bit chunky.

Not so with our lip gloss! I’ve formulated a moisturizing gloss that drenches your lips in color and shine without the stickiness. Unless that’s what you’re going for. No matter how you want your lip gloss to feel — smooth, sticky, longer-lasting — Mix Cosmetiques has you covered. I can even add sun protection and age-fighting benefits, customized to be just right for you, and no one else.

Lip Balm

The last lip product I’m going to talk about is lip balm. I don’t know about you, but lip balm just makes my lips happy. It’s wonderful for soothing dry, chapped lips, adding a bit of moisture to keep lips healthy, or even just giving a bit more shine.

Fabulous lip balm is an absolute must for everybody. And the soothing and moisturizing Lip Balm from Mix Cosmetiques is a favorite of anyone and everyone who tries it.

This lip balm has an apricot oil base and is infused with oatmeal, calendula, and rose petals to create a swoon-worthy, long-lasting, moisture-rich balm to soothe and protect your lips. All in a convenient little tube.

Finding the best lip products can be a challenge. There are thousands of options to choose from, and hundreds of brands competing for your attention. To find the best lip product for you, you’ll want to pay attention to how the product feels when you use it.

Is it too smudgy, too dehydrating, too sticky, or gone just as soon as you apply it? It’s probably not a good fit for you and your body. You don’t have to sacrifice comfort for beauty. And don’t let anyone tell you different!
